Public Sector HealthCare
The public system of healthcare in Peru is government funded and is “Comprehensive Health Insurance” mandated by Peruvian Ministry of Health (MINSA). Seguro Integral de Salud (SIS) is the Peruvian equivalent to the United State’s Medicaid system. The insurance covers citizens who are too poor to afford their own insurance. SIS protects about 18 percent of Peru’s population, mostly those in rural and densely urban areas. This system however only subsidizes healthcare for Peruvians, and patients are still generally required to pay a small fee to receive healthcare, with exceptions for pregnant women.
EsSalud is a national system that covers working families through their employers. The insurance is financed through an employer contribution of about 9 percent the wage of the worker. Retired workers are financed by those currently in the labor force via a 4 percent tax. EsSalud insures about 20 percent of the population.
